Schedule social media posts from Gemini CLI
To let Gemini CLI schedule posts through Hookpost by Hookstep, run one gemini mcp add command with your Hookpost API key, or add a hookpost entry to ~/.gemini/settings.json with httpUrl (not url, which Gemini CLI reads as an SSE server). Gemini CLI can then list your connected channels and save posts as drafts, scheduled posts or posts that go out now. The key comes with Hookpost Standard ($19 a month, ₹599 in India) or Pro.

Set it up in four steps
- Copy your Hookpost API key. Connect your social accounts in Hookpost, then open Settings → Developers → Reveal → Copy.
- Add the server. Run gemini mcp add --transport http --scope user --header "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" hookpost https://hookpost.hookstep.in/api/mcp. Without --scope user the server is added to the current project only.
- Check it. Run gemini mcp list, or start gemini and type /mcp to see the server, its status and its tools.
- Ask for drafts first. Ask Gemini to list your Hookpost channels and save posts as drafts. Review them in the Hookpost calendar before you ask it to schedule.
With one command
Replace YOUR_API_KEY with your key. --scope user makes the server available in every project:
gemini mcp add --transport http --scope user \ --header "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" \ hookpost https://hookpost.hookstep.in/api/mcp
gemini mcp list # hookpost should be listed gemini # then type /mcp to see its tools
Or edit settings.json
Add the hookpost entry to ~/.gemini/settings.json, next to any servers you already have:
~/.gemini/settings.json
{
"mcpServers": {
"hookpost": {
"httpUrl": "https://hookpost.hookstep.in/api/mcp",
"headers": { "Authorization": "Bearer YOUR_API_KEY" }
}
}
}httpUrl is Streamable HTTP, which is what Hookpost speaks. With url instead, Gemini CLI treats the address as an SSE endpoint, which is not what Hookpost serves.
A first prompt
prompt
List my Hookpost channels. Turn notes/launch.md into one LinkedIn post, one X post under 280 characters and one Threads post under 500. Save all three as Hookpost drafts for Monday 09:30 IST. Do not publish anything.
Gemini lists your channels with integrationList, checks each network's limits with integrationSchema, and saves the drafts with integrationSchedulePostTool. If a post breaks a network's rule, the tool returns the error so Gemini can fix it. There is no delete tool, and no tool edits the text or date of an existing post, reads analytics or connects a new channel. Do those in the app.

| Claude Code | claude mcp add --transport http … --header | ~/.claude.json, or .mcp.json with --scope project | Authorization header (or ${VAR} in .mcp.json) | claude mcp list |
| Codex CLI | Edit config.toml | ~/.codex/config.toml, table [mcp_servers.hookpost] | bearer_token_env_var reads it from an environment variable | codex mcp list, or /mcp inside codex |
| Gemini CLI | gemini mcp add --transport http … --header | ~/.gemini/settings.json, or .gemini/settings.json in a project | headers, with httpUrl (url means SSE) | gemini mcp list, or /mcp inside gemini |

Questions
- Can Gemini CLI post to social media?
- Yes, through an MCP server. With Hookpost by Hookstep's hosted server added, Gemini CLI can list the channels connected in your Hookpost workspace, read each network's rules and create draft, scheduled or immediate posts. Hookpost publishes scheduled posts itself, so Gemini CLI does not have to stay open.
- Why httpUrl and not url?
- Gemini CLI treats url as a Server-Sent Events endpoint and httpUrl as Streamable HTTP. Hookpost’s server speaks Streamable HTTP, so the entry needs httpUrl; gemini mcp add --transport http writes it for you.
- Where does Gemini CLI keep the config?
- In ~/.gemini/settings.json for every project, or .gemini/settings.json inside one project. gemini mcp add writes to the project file unless you pass --scope user. A project file holds the key in plain text, so keep it out of git.
- Does this work in the Gemini app or Gemini in Google Workspace?
- This page covers Gemini CLI, the terminal agent, which reads MCP servers from settings.json. Hookpost has not tested any other Gemini product with its server.
- Which Hookpost plan do I need?
- The API key, and with it the MCP server, comes with Standard ($19 a month, ₹599 in India: 5 channels, 500 posts a month) and Pro ($29 a month, ₹1,999 in India: 20 channels, 2,000 posts a month, up to 15 team members). Every plan starts with a 3-day trial, and the trial includes the key.
- Can I try it before paying?
- Yes. 3-day trial: in India ₹0 today, then ₹599/month by UPI AutoPay or card; elsewhere $19/month after, by card; cancel at least 24 hours before the first charge.
- Can Gemini delete or edit posts?
- There is no delete tool, and no tool edits the text or date of an existing post, reads analytics or connects a new channel. Do those in the app. Gemini can change the network settings of a post that has not gone out yet.
- Which networks can it post to?
- Any channel connected in your workspace: Hookpost connects 18 networks, and in the 30 days to 22 October 2026 it published from production to Instagram, Facebook Pages, Threads, X, LinkedIn, YouTube, Pinterest, Discord and Slack. LinkedIn Company Pages, Reddit and Mastodon are not supported; Medium stopped issuing new API tokens, so Hookpost does not connect Medium.
